Dream Rugs is a series of text-based tufted rugs that serve as reflections of the inner, private lives we navigate daily. The series explores how a mundane domestic object can reveal personal aspects of our lives—specifically, our dreams. It is personal, universal, and cultural; we all dream. We are encouraged to dream beyond the limits of our lives. Through songs, books, films, and conversations, we’re told that no dream is too great to achieve.
While society encourages and applauds dreaming, it simultaneously stifles those dreams by imposing practicality. A person’s dream can be seen as either a life goal or an unattainable idea—unreal until it becomes real. There’s a fine line between hope and hopelessness, one that can only be understood through the lens of the individual. It seems the world celebrates dreams only once they’ve been realized; until then, they are often viewed as impossible.
In this series, I reflect on the imbalance created by societal pressure to attain one's dreams, working within the constraints of a grayscale system—transitioning from white to black, with the murky in-between grey. Where does one’s dream truly lie?
